My work seeks out the gentle whisperings of human trace within a building. By looking behind, beneath and within the fabric of the building I search for what makes these places come alive. Whilst buildings are coordinates of space and time, they also consist of the events of their past. Buildings soak up and expand on a wave of memories and over time they accumulate something of a ‘voice’.
By anthropomorphising the building and believing it is more than an assembly of construction materials, I explore these historic skeletons upon which we hang notions of self, society and heritage and seek to express this 'voice' through my work.
By revealing the tangible expressions elderly buildings wear, bequeathed from long-departed generations, I become part of that aging process; not only by identifying myself with the past but of positioning myself within the timeline of the building and of imagining myself from the perspective of future generations, as part of the past to come. In this sense my work is a multi-dimensional fragmented recording of these experiences of time and place. I seek to not only hear the voice of the building but become wrapped within it.
Like a collection of individual memories of textures, forms, light and sounds, the coldness of stone or the quality of light my work seeks to express this aura through a collection of line, texture, shadow and form. Primarily this is realised through various printmaking techniques. Participation, Photography and Video are also used to create work.
